First graders and nursery students recently put on a performance to teach their classmates and family about the importance of preserving our planet by decreasing waste. The students produced a fashion show to inspire the audience to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
This integrated project was a natural point of collaboration for students in the two grades, as the curriculum studied for both revolves around Earth’s place in the Solar System. As an extension of that learning, both classes enthusiastically took up the concept of humans’ responsibilities as stewards of the environment. The fashions they created for the show featured ingenious ways to reuse or recycle materials that might otherwise end up in landfills.
In preparation for the show, the students wrote and practiced a song with Performing Arts teacher Deanna Locascio and created the show’s sets and costumes with Visual Arts teacher Nicole Berberena.
