On February 6–8, Ross School Tennis Academy player Jonas Erdman ‘16 dominated the courts at the Point Set winter championship, taking first place in the Boys’ 16 Singles category. The event, held at Point Set Indoor Tennis Center in Oceanside, New York, gathered a full 64 player draw. Jonas ultimately triumphed in two final matches 6–1 and 6–2.
Fellow RSTA teammate Gabe Rissman ‘18 advanced to the semifinals of the same event; eventually losing to Jonas in a close match. Jonas, who joined RSTA in January, is Germany’s top-ranked 16 and under player.
The excellence continued this past weekend at the L1 Huntington Station February Championships. RSTA player Athanasios Bilis ‘18 fought his way to the finals, eventually losing a very close match to another strong L1 player.
Next up, Jonas and Athanasios will join Ross tennis pro Hleb Maslau to play in a professional hardscrabble prize money tournament in Brewster, New York on February 21 and 22. RSTA coaches agree it will be a great experience for the students to play against college-level and pro-level competitors.
Phil Williamson, RSTA head coach, said RSTA’s excellence on the courts is testament to the abilities of the players as they continue to develop to improve their game in stronger and more competitive competitions with some of the best players on Long Island.
Congratulations and good luck!
