Ross faculty, staff, students, and alumni achieve many accomplishments throughout the year, both on and off campus. To close out the school year, we’re recognizing the first and seventh grades; the Global Women’s Movement Class; and students Lily Baron, Elizabeth Burdge, Cole Colby, Emma Engel, Yanni Giannakopoulos, Sam Hamilton, Daniela Herman, Evelyn Liang, Lynn Lin, Wyeth Moyer, Cosma Siekierski, Naomi Tankel, and Amili Targownik, as well as faculty and staff Brianna Ashe, Soraya Brooks, Jennifer Cross, Sheryl Hastalis, Maria Maciek, Dr. Dave Morgan, John Mulhern, Ned Smyth, Mami Takeda, and Shannon Timoney.
On June 17, Ross students and teachers were honored for their work in select categories at the LongHouse Reserve 2014 Student Annual VII Awards Ceremony.
- Ross School first grade, with teachers Soraya Brooks and Brianna Ashe, placed first in Printmaking for their Patterns in Nature project.
- Sophomore Emma Engel and freshman Elizabeth Burdge won first place in the Performing Arts for their collaborative dance and poetry video. The students were mentored by Wellness teacher Sheryl Hastalis, and the video was filmed and edited by Ross alumni Noah Engel and Cian Costello. Emma and Elizabeth performed their award-winning piece at the ceremony.
- Eleventh grader Evelyn Liang won Best in Show in Printmaking for her Laughing Warriors piece. Her teacher and mentor is Dean of Visual Arts Jennifer Cross.
- Visual Arts teacher Jon Mulhern’s seventh grade class won first place for their sculpture, Tree with Dreams.
- Jennifer Cross’s high school printmaking class placed first in Book Arts for their collaborative project (untitled).
- Junior Lynn Lin’s painting, Reflections, placed first. She is also a student of Jennifer Cross.
Through such fundraisers as a “1950s bake sale,” students of the Global Women’s Movements elective were able to purchase an educator’s edition of the film Girl Rising, which they screened at an Upper School assembly followed by an additional fundraiser screening for the East End community. Their efforts garnered over $850 that they proudly donated to the Girl Rising Fund, which supports international organizations advocating for girls’ rights, education, and opportunities.
Four Ross students received Teeny Awards from East End Arts at a ceremony on June 8 at Longwood High School. Best Supporting Actor in a Drama went to sophomore Yanni Giannakopoulos for his role in Median; junior Amili Targownik received Best Supporting Actor in a Drama award for her role in her autobiographical monologue The One-and-a-Half-Year Silent Girl; and freshman Daniela Herman and senior Naomi Tankel tied for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for their roles in The Grand Scheme.
The sailing team finished second in the invitational regatta at Breakwater Yacht Club in Sag Harbor on Saturday, May 27. Sophomore Cole Colby and Christian Muller of Stony Brook placed second in A division, and freshman Wyeth Moyer and Dylan DiSunno of East Hampton were second in B division.
Maria Maciak, director of Media Production, was part of a panel of women artists from various disciplines on June 14 at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center. Their topic of discussion was “Unmasking the Muse: Inspiration in the Arts.”
On June 14, Visual Arts teacher Ned Smyth was an expert speaker during the “Enlivening and Enjoying Public Space” session at the American Institute of Architects’ “Open to the Public” symposium, which examines the multiple dimensions of public space.
Next month, Open Court Publishing will publish Jurassic Park and Philosophy: The Truth Is Terrifying, the 82nd book in its series on pop culture and philosophy. This volume includes a chapter on chaos theory written by Dr. David Morgan, director of Innovation Lab @Ross and dean of Science. The chapter explores the role that mathematical theory plays in the plot of the Jurassic Park novel and movies, in which the character Ian Malcolm, a mathematician, predicts the downfall of the dinosaur theme park based on ideas that author Michael Crichton borrowed from popular books on chaos theory. As a physicist and the instructor of Ross School's course on complex dynamical systems for students and faculty, David brings a unique perspective to the analysis of the film. This is his second contribution to the Open Court series, having written a chapter on time travel paradoxes for the 2013 Planet of the Apes and Philosophy: Great Apes Think Alike.
At the Ross School Class of 2014 graduation ceremony on June 14, special awards were bestowed to recognize the extraordinary work of teachers and students. The Courtney Sale Ross Award, in recognition of faculty members most exemplary of the Ross School vision of leadership, academic excellence, and personal integrity, was awarded to Upper School World Languages and Literature teacher Mami Takeda, and Lower School teacher Shannon Timoney. Samuel Hamilton received the Ross School Board Award for demonstration of outstanding leadership qualities; the Anders G. Holst Award for a senior who demonstrates courage in creativity went to Cosma Siekierski; and Lily Baron received the Steven J. Ross Humanitarian Award in recognition of her pursuit of excellence, magnanimity of intention, and personal integrity.
