Second graders combined the study of art and their Solar System unit last week at Sylvia Hommert’s studio. After learning about the artist’s process of capturing light and its depth, students put their knowledge to use and created their own celestial designs.
Using materials that enhance and illuminate the liquidity and fluidity of light, the second graders carved designs out of beeswax. Next, the students painted and decorated their cravings with glitter, building up materials to create depth and texture. In order to create a glossy surface and enhance the paint color and the appearance of the other decorations the students used, the art will be dipped in resin, which will take a few weeks. The students are anxious to see the end result of their creative endeavors!
