Traversing the Silk Road

The seventh grade finished its Silk Road unit last week and celebrated by displaying an array of work in and outside the Café.

In the second century BC, the Silk Road was a complex network of trade routes connecting East, South, and Western Asia with the Mediterranean and European world. Trade on this route was a significant factor in the development of the civilizations of China, India, Persia, Europe, and Arabia.

In cultural history and English, the students wrote essays and made illustrations of items traded on the Silk Road or invented during that time period, such as Egyptian glass, silkworms, spices, jade, and the magnetic compass. They also made symbols and "passports" in their Mandarin classes and painted maps of the trade routes in art. Soon they will play a new Silk Road board game created by math teacher Jennifer Biscardi and art teacher Jon Mulhern.

On February 7, the Café served a special “Silk Road” menu that represented various regions the Silk Road crossed through. The Ross community dined on hummus and pita, North African winter squash stew, Kusherie lentils and rice, an Egyptian dish, Persian yogurt and eggplant, and rice noodles with shiitake mushrooms.
