Afternoons @Ross offers a variety of courses in art, media, music, performance, science, athletics, and tennis. Under the guidance of Ross faculty and local professionals, students ages 5 and up can participate in exciting, new activities in a fun, relaxed environment. Classes meet in the afternoon or on Saturdays. Classes are held at the Lower School campus unless otherwise noted.

Art Around the World
Deborah Lukasik
Immerse yourself in cultures from around the world in this interactive art experience. Students will create art inspired by different areas of the globe while enjoying music of the regions and learning the cultural significance behind each project.

Art Inspired by the Masters
Deborah Lukasik
Embark on a mixed-media adventure. Young artists create work based on the style and techniques of master artists from different eras. Students explore the frescoes of Botticelli, the portraits of Rembrandt, Monet’s obsession with light; Matisse’s boldly colored paper cutouts, Cornell’s boxes, Warhol’s prints, and more, then create their own interpretations.

Comic Book Creation
Nina Ross
Come get started on your own comic project. In this workshop, we discuss a few aspects of the process of developing comic art. Students also explore the essential mechanics of comics and graphic storytelling through discussion and creative exercises.

Engineering FUNdamentals
Play-Well Teknologies
Design and build motorized machines, catapults, pyramids, demolition derby cars, truss and suspension bridges, buildings, and other constructions using LEGO. Students explore concepts in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, and architecture while playing with their favorite creations.

Green Avenger Workshop
Erika Haberkorn
The main focus of this course is to teach simple eco-friendly tips that students can incorporate into their day-to-day routines in an urban or suburban community. Fun and interactive eco-activities will empower and guide students as they strive to live more sustainably in their own neighborhoods. At the end of the course, students will be certified as honorary members of the Green Avenger Club.

Gymnastics
Andjela Krsikapa
Combining endurance, flexibility, and coordination, gymnastics is an excellent way to stay fit and build self-esteem. With a focus on basic gymnastic techniques and movements, this class broadens students’ physical and mental knowledge of the gymnastic arts. The coaches are friendly and experienced, and strive to provide excellent gymnastic instruction.

“Making a Scene”: Ross Children’s Community Theater
Margaret Kestler
The Winter/Spring session of the Ross Community Theater program will focus on scene studies, ensemble work, monologues, and dramatic and musical theater. Students will develop appreciation for the variety of acting roles within the scope of selected scenes for young actors. Students will also have the opportunity to explore and perform major and minor characters in leading and supporting roles. The class will culminate in June with a performance that is a compilation of scenes and characters brought to life by the students.

Mastering English Pronunciation
In this class, students learn about English pronunciation and presentation. Ultimately, they are given the skills needed to become effective, confident communicators, including eloquent diction; optimal speaking pace; proper inflection; accuracy in word choice; and natural stance, posture, and gestures. The skills learned will prepare students for many types of verbal communication, from classroom presentations, to professional and academic interviews, to public speaking opportunities.

Newspaper
Jeanette Tyndall and Mary Larsen
Learn how a newspaper is created. Students act as editors and journalists, conducting interviews, writing articles, and coming up with their very own columns in an official Ross Lower School Newspaper.

Ready, Set, DRAW!

In this exciting course, students will be introduced to the basics of drawing from observation. After focusing on the fundamentals of gesture drawing, students learn how to draw what they see using basic shapes and contour to refine those building blocks into a beautiful image. The class will address shading and value, creating the appearance of volume in an image, creating believable space, and simple perspective techniques.

TOEFL Prep
This class is designed for students who want additional support in preparing for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Students gain a comprehensive range of test-taking skills as well as foundational study skills that contribute to the overall success of their academic career. The TOEFL measures an individual’s ability to use and understand English in an academic setting. Many elite U.S. colleges and universities emphasize the importance of TOEFL scores in the admissions process for international students.

Ultimate Pottery Experience

Students explore multiple hand-forming clay techniques and spend time learning to create on the pottery wheel with individualized attention from the instructors.
